George
J. Annas is the Edward R. Utley Professor and chair of the Department
of Health Law, Bioethics and Human Rights at the Boston University School
of Public Health, as well as a professor in the university’s schools
of Medicine and Law. He is co-founder of Global Lawyers and Physicians,
a transnational professional association that promotes human rights and
health.
Professor Annas is author or editor of 12 books on health law and bioethics, including The Rights of Patients, Judging Medicine, Standard of Care, Some Choice, and American Bioethics, along with a play, Shelley's Brain. He is ranked the nation’s most cited law professor in the field of health law. In addition to longtime features for the Hastings Center Report and the American Journal of Public Health, Professor Annas has written a regular feature for the New England Journal of Medicine since 1991.
He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the Institute of Medicine, and a co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Committee on Health Rights and Bioethics, and has held a variety of state government regulatory posts.
Professor Annas earned a B.A. from Harvard College, a J.D. from Harvard Law School and an M.P.H. from Harvard School of Public Health.
